Dear Friends, If you cannot view the images in this message, enable images or visit here to see this newsletter.

Las Vegas - 3 nights including airfare, accommodations, and taxes from
$158*! Las Vegas is America's only major city founded in the 20th century,
and as such, possesses a singular attitude, an unusual ambience that can
best be described as post-historical. Yesterday's Las Vegas gives way to
tomorrow's so quickly that history is constantly being made by everyone
from big-time players like Steve Wynn to small-time snowbirds winning
megabucks, all cashing in on their share of the American dream.
It is important when scoping a Project to ensure that details are clear
with minimal possibility of misinterpretation or confusion on the part of
stakeholders. It should be clear from the outset what is and is not
included in the scope of the Project. This will help avoid potential
difficulties arising from any unscoped additions on the task load,
ultimately causing slippage in the progress of the Project. It will also
help you manage stakeholder expectations by communicating clearly what you
will and won't deliver. A project may meet all of its objectives yet still
be perceived as a failure by stakeholders if they have misunderstood the
scope of the project and expect to receive benefits you are unable to
    deliver.
An example of this could include the scoping of a timetabling system -
will the system hold courses or examinations - or both? If the Project
Scope includes only courses then the possibility of inclusion of
examinations would be outside of the original scope.
It can often prove quite difficult to keep within scope given that
additional suggestions can be closely linked to the original initiative.
Changing the scope of the project frequently poses risks in terms of
keeping to budget and deadlines but it is important to realise that scope
change may also offer opportunities to derive previously unforeseen
benefits. Conversely you may also need to descope items from time to time
in order to keep within project tolerance limits. The key to managing your
project scope is to include a formal Change Control mechanism within your
    project methodology.
When working with external libraries, the lack of unit tests! can make it
hard for an XP team to make progress. Because the unit tests have to run
at 100 percent, problems with an external library can cause major
headaches with getting the tests to pass. Over time, this will resolve
itself as more and more libraries are shipped with XP-style unit tests,
but until then there will always be some discussion as to whether it is
better to use an external library or to create a robust version in-house.
GUI code probably tops the list as being very hard to test. All GUI
libraries are large and complex, and most were not developed with the idea
that programmers needed an easy way to test their applications. Although
we now have capture/playback testing tools, these are of limited use
because they interact only with the user interface. They cannot easily
compare values in the running application with data displayed on the user
interface. Currently, most teams resolve this by making
the GUI code as thin as possible aand by providing an alternate input
mechanism for testing the user interface.

Clean Slates And Fresh Starts! If it is hard to find certain articles of
clothing in your bedroom closet each morning, you probably need to work on
your closet organization. There are a lot of tools and items that will
make this task easier, whether it is a major overhaul or just
    -------------------------------------------------------------
A major issue for an organisation of ouris who to involve in any project.
This may be glossed over in many commercial approaches on the assumption
that it is generally obvious who should be allocated a particular job.
Things aren't quite the same in the education world which is why we focus
here on involvement rather than simply setting up a team.
Most project methodologies will take you through identifying your key
stakeholders, assessing their likely attitudes to the project and
designing strategies to keep them on board. In education you ignore this
at your peril. There are various approaches to involving stakeholders and
you must think carefully about the best approach for your particular
circumstances in order to get input from the right people at the right
    time.
Stakeholder Analysis It is worth drawing up a list of stakeholders and
their possible impact on and attitudes to the project.
To view the JISC infoNet template for Stakeholder Analysis use the
    following link, Stakeholder analysis template.
It is important that the analysis is shared with colleagues and preferably
"signed off" at project sponsor level to ensure that you do not get a
"rabbit-out-of-the-hat" stakeholder emerging unexpectedly in the middle of
your project. This can de-rail a project.
In drawing up this sort of schedule it sometimes helps to assess the
"Potential impact on the Project" heading if you consider the type of
involvement various stakeholders have on complex projects. If the project
has been set in a strategic context it will follow that most members of
the organisation will be seen to some extent as stakeholders exercising
some sort of influence or control as follows:
Strategic - Determining the strategy which this system underpins - may
    sponsor the project
Managerial - Executes managerial control over elements of the system being
    implemented
Operational - Is involved in operating the system or parts of it
Direct Influence - Is directly affected by outputs of the system but is
not engaged in inputting to it.
Indirect Influence - Is only indirectly affected by the system if at all.
This is not an exhaustive list and you can create your own types to help
you analyse your own organisation. However it is particularly important
for you not to ignore the last two types of stakeholder. Although it could
be argued that the last type is not a stakeholder at all, it is a
particular characteristic of education organisations that particular
interest groups have disproportionate negative power. You need to
acknowledge this and devise a management strategy for it. Typically, this
often involves large-scale communication exercises just to ensure that
people remain "onside". This is another reason why systems implementation
in an educational environment is often so complex.
This covers organisational stakeholder analysis but you might ask "What do
I do about directly involving people?" There are two basic approaches to
this which can be summed up as Representation v Delegation. Both have
    advantages and drawbacks.

Converting from a traditional project to an XP project is hard because
the original code does not have XP-style unit tests. Although it may be
feasible to create unit tests for the original code, this could take
months, and in that time the team would not be delivering new features or
functionality. In practice, what most teams try to do is to write unit
tests only for code that they are modifying. Working with the rest of
the untested code is still an issue, however, and an XP team could be
tempted to push to restart the project from scratch to avoid the pain of
dealing with the original code. Sometimes this can be a useful option,
but the organization has to be sure that the existing code cannot be
salvaged in order for this to be a realistic option.

A panda bear walks into a bar and orders a sandwich. The waiter brings him
the sandwich. The panda bear eats it, pulls out a pistol, kills the
waiter, and gets up and starts to walk out. The bartender yells for him to
stop. The panda bear asks, "What do you want?" The bartender replies,
"First you come in here, order food, kill my waiter, then try to go
without paying for your food." The panda bear turns around and says, "Hey!
I'm a Panda. Look it up!" The bartender goes into the back room and looks
up panda bear in the encyclopedia, which read: "Panda: a bear-like
marsupial originating in Asian regions. Known largely for it's stark
black and white coloring. Eats shoots and leaves."

Springfield Township is a Second Class Township. The Township is governed
by a five-member Board of supervisors, each elected to serve a six-year
term. The Township population, according to the 2000 census, is just under
5,000 residents. Springfield is one of five townships that make up the
Palisades School District. Springfield Elementary School, located on Route
212, is in the Township. There are eight post offices located in the
Township: Springtown, Quakertown, Coopersburg, Hellertown, Kintnersville,
Riegelsville, Zion Hill and Richlandtown. They are not all located in the
Township, but partially cover sections of Springfield Township. We also
have two area codes: 610 and 215. Springfield Township's Road Department
is responsible for maintaining 46 miles of paved road and 14 miles of dirt
roads. Open Space preservation is a priority for the residents of
Springfield Township. In 2000, the residents approved by Referendum a .25%
Earned Income Tax to be set aside for prese
rvation of open space. At the end of 2003, Springfield Township had
preserved 385 acres at a cost to the township of $844 per acre. Whenever
possible, the Township matches funding sources to ensure that the
residents get the most for their tax money.
The following permits, licenses and plan approvals must be obtained:

    Kathryn:
Good morning! How was your weekend? We were busy all weekend with the
charity benefit that Dr. Hauser was sponsoring. He wanted to have one
more big gala and fundraising event before his retirement. Needless
to say, that consumed my weekend, but was phenomenal.
Thanks for the list. No problem about additional attendees. I planned
on last minute RSVPs and invited persons who didn't RSVP at all to
show up. After all, Dr. Hauser has been working in this hospital, in
this community for over 30 years. So, I will make the necessary
additions to my place cards and seating chart.
    It's getting close... I can't believe it.
Well, I need to run, but I will speak with you later this week.
    Sincerely,
    Mandy Brinkman

Harmony Boys since 1984. God has richly blessed them with their
unique style of Southern Gospel music, polished off with smooth
four-part harmony. Based near Charleston, WV, they cover a large
portion of West Virginia and surrounding states nearly every weekend.
    Those weekends usually don't
include Sundays though, because the group has two pastors and every
group member is dedicated to working in his own home church.
The Faith Harmony Boys signed an exclusive recording contract in
January, 2005 with Lamp Music Group in Whitesville, GA. Their first
Lamp recording should be completed by mid-summer. The new recording
features seven strong original songs by group members, and several
other tremendous works by writers including David Needham and Diane
    Needham-Mummert of The
    Needhams.

Lamp President, Mike Pillow, recently shared his thoughts on the
    agreement,
"I first met the FHB in the early 90's and have been aware of their
industry presence over the years. God has truly blessed these men
with not only an entertaining delivery, but an awesome spirit. I am
looking forward to great things for God as a result of this
    partnership!"
FHB's first nationally distributed project, Extreme Faith, was
recorded in March, 1997 with Reformation Records. Nine of the ten
cuts on this project were written by group members. This included
their first two national single releases, FAITH IS THE VICTORY, and I
LOVE IT WHEN GOD'S PLAN COMES TOGETHER, which climbed to #73 on the
    U.S. Gospel News Top 100
    chart for November 1998.
In September, 1999 they released their second nationally-distributed
recording project, Pure Gold. The first radio single from this
project, TRAVELING ON THROUGH CANAAN,climbed to #71 in the June 2000
issue of the Singing News magazine's Top 80 chart. The next three
single releases, WELCOME HOME MY CHILD, I'M LOOKING FOR JESUS, and
    TRUSTING IN JESUS also
received good radio response across the country.
The Faith Harmony Boys are honored to be a featured artist at the
annual Eastern Quartet Convention in Greensburg, PA which is
sponsored by Streets of Gold Promotions. Joe Chioda, president of
Streets of Gold, had this to say about the Faith Harmony Boys:

"...'they are a classy group of men that makes you know youve been
ministered to in song and word!...
...I saw their commitment in who and what they believe in and that is
most important to me! This group presented themselves the way each
Gospel group should. You can guarantee theyll be singing for me a
lot in the future, theres no doubt about that. Id do anything I
could in helping these guys because I have the confidence in them to
    always give and be
the best at what they do. - Joe Chioda
While some of the faces may have changed over the years, The Faith
Harmony Boys still possess a smooth, Southern Gospel Quartet sound
and a strong desire to be used of the Lord. Current members of the
group are Daris Shamblin, singing bass; Roger Comer singing baritone
and playing piano; John Cole singing lead; and Mike Maggard, singing
    tenor.
The primary goal of the Faith Harmony Boys is to lift up and magnify
the name of their Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. The next time you
hear that the Faith Harmony Boys are in your area, plan to attend and
enjoy an evening of inspiring southern gospel music, or as they put
it, an evening of praise. They devote much of their time to God and
    their
ministry....With their song, they do praise Him.

In today's installment, Andrea hits the road to see how the rest of the New Work folks live, and runs into her arch-nemesis, Rat-Toothed Freddy: She was in the middle of receiving her key when someone grabbed her shoulder and squeezed it. "Andrea bloody Fleeks! What are you doing here, love?" The smell of his breath was like a dead thing, left to fester. She turned around slowly, not wanting to believe that of all the hotels in rural Rhode Island, she ended up checking into the same one as Rat-Toothed Freddy. "Hey, Freddy," she said. Seeing him gave her an atavistic urge to stab him repeatedly in the throat with the hotel stick-pen. He was unshaven, his gawky Adam's apple bobbing up and down and he swallowed and smiled wetly. "Nice to see you." "Fantastic to see you, too! I'm here covering a shareholder meeting for Westinghouse, is that what you're here for, too?" "No," she said. She knew the meeting was on that week, but hadn't planned on attending it. She was done with press conferences, preferring on-the-ground reporting. "Well, nice to see you." "Oh, do stay for a drink," he said, grinning more widely, exposing those grey teeth in a shark's smile. "Come on -- they have a free cocktail hour in this place. I'll have to report you to the journalist's union if you turn down a free drink." "I don't think 'bloggers' have to worry about the journalist's union," she said, making sarcastic finger-quotes in case he didn't get the message. He still didn't. He laughed instead. "Oh, love, I'm sure they'll still have you even if you have lapsed away from the one true faith." "Good night, Freddy," was all she could manage to get out without actually hissing through her teeth. "OK, good night," he said, moving in to give her a hug. As he loomed toward her, she snapped. "Freeze, mister. You are not my friend. I do not want to touch you. You have poor personal hygiene and your breath smells like an overflowing camp-toilet. You write vicious personal attacks on me and on the people I care about. You are unfair, mean-spirited, and you write badly. The only day I wouldn't piss on you, Freddy, is the day you were on fire. Now get the fuck out of my way before I kick your tiny little testicles up through the roof of your reeking mouth." Comments (2) | Posted on November 7, 2005 08:15 AM Themepunks Part 8Salon has published part eight of my novel-in-progress, Themepunks (previous installments). In today's installment, the shanty-town finds itself under siege, and shots are fired: He pulled out the megaphone and went to his window. "ATTENTION POLICE," he said. "THIS IS THE LEASEHOLDER FOR THIS PROPERTY. WHY ARE YOU RUNNING AROUND WITH YOUR GUNS DRAWN? WHAT IS GOING ON?" The police at the cars looked toward the workshop, then back to the shantytown, then back to the workshop. "SERIOUSLY. THIS IS NOT COOL. WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE?" One of the cops grabbed the mic for his own loudhailer. "THIS IS THE MIAMI-DADE COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT. WE HAVE RECEIVED INTELLIGENCE THAT AN ARMED FUGITIVE IS ON THESE PREMISES. WE HAVE COME TO RETRIEVE HIM." "WELL, THAT'S WEIRD. NONE OF THE CHILDREN, CIVILIANS AND HARDWORKING PEOPLE HERE ARE FUGITIVES AS FAR AS I KNOW. CERTAINLY THERE'S NO ONE ARMED AROUND HERE. WHY DON'T YOU GET BACK IN YOUR CARS AND I'LL COME OUT AND WE'LL RESOLVE THIS LIKE CIVILIZED PEOPLE, OK?"

    Hey baby,
Of course, all of your friends are more than welcome. Your dad and I
have each invited some people from work, so it will be a big group.
Festive and fun, most definitely. And don't be silly... you don't
need to give me money, but you will be helping in the kitchen as we
do have lots of food to prepare for the big dinner.
Are your friends riding with you home or are they going to drive
their cars? Doesn't matter, but we don't have the BMW this weekend,
as it's in the shop getting some new gadget your dad wanted put in.
I will talk to you on Wednesday before you leave, right?
I love you. We can't wait to see you.
    xoxo,
    Mom

    Subject: Thanksgiving Dinner
    Hey Mom,
As you said I could, I invited some people from college home for the
Thanksgiving weekend. They either don't live here and can't afford
to go or don't have families to go home too.
    1. Julie - who is from Toronto, Canada
    2. Mike - he doesn't have family at home in NY - his parents decided
to go on a Caribbean Cruise this Thanksgiving
    3. Missy - she is from California and can't afford to go home. She
is in my pre-med classes, and is on a scholarship
    4. Jodie - she is from Florida and her parents house got really
damaged in the last hurricane, so they told her to wait and come for
    Christmas break.
So, I know it's kinda big, but please please please welcome them all.
I'll pay you turkey. You might have to cook two birds. LOVE YOU!!!
You are such an awesome mom.
    Talk to you later,
    Jo

Praising God through song has been the aspiration of the Faith
