High blood pressure not well controlled among older men and women
This study shows that while the rate of high blood pressure increased with
    age,
numbers of people receiving treatment for the condition did not. Seventy-four
percent of people age 80 and older had high blood pressure, compared with 63
percent of those age 60 to 79 and 27 percent of those under the age of 60.
However, less than two thirds of hypertensive patients in the two older age
    groups received treatment.
High blood pressure, also called hypertension, is a major risk factor for the
development of heart disease and a leading cause of many life-threatening
conditions such as stroke, heart attack, and kidney failure.
Many more men and women are now living healthy and active lives into
    their 80s
and 90s. As clinicians, we should not loosen our management of high blood
pressure just because a patient has had the good fortune to reach an older
age, said Daniel Levy, M.D., director of the Framingham Heart Study and a
study co-author. For these patients, managing high blood pressure may
    make the
difference between living many more healthy years, or spending those years
recovering from a debilitating stroke or heart attack.
Investigators from the Framingham Heart Study, a landmark epidemiological
    study
that began in 1948, analyzed data from its original cohort of participants,
enrolled in 1948-1952, and their offspring, enrolled 1971-1973. In all, this
study included 5,296 participants contributing 14,458 total examinations over
the period studied. High blood pressure was defined as a systolic blood
pressure of greater or equal to 140 mm Hg or diastolic blood pressure greater
than or equal to 90 mm Hg, or taking medication for reducing blood pressure.
Normal blood pressure is less than 120 mm Hg systolic and less than 80 mm Hg
    diastolic.
According to the authors, the data suggest that the poor control rates may be
due in part to poor selection of drug classes or from the use of a single
    drug
for therapy. Among all ages studied, 60 percent of patients were treated with
only one antihypertensive medication, and only 23 percent of women and 38
percent of women over age 80 were being treated with a diuretic.
Full study results will be published in the July 27, 2005, edition of the
Journal of the American Medical Association.

    1. Cardinals
    1st
SAME 1st/5th Need something to worry about Cards fans? Ace Chris Carpenter has a 5.40 ERA for the month of September. Considering he's topped his previous career high in innings by 20, there's concern that he's gassed. Extra rest leading up to the postseason would be a good idea. On the upside, the Cards have clinched the top seed in the NL.

SAME 2nd/24th Imagine how pretty the Tribe would be sitting if they'd gotten adequate production from their first basemen, third basemen and right fielders. In any event, their remaining games come at home. However, the Tribe this season has a better record away from the Jake. They're also only 8-15 this season against their remaining opponents, the D-Rays
and White Sox. If all that sounds grim, Cleveland still is tied with the Red Sox and Yankees for the AL wild card.

    3. Yankees
    8th
(+5) 1st/23rd Lost in the recent Yankee offensive surge is that Matt Lawton has "hit" .130 AVG/.273 OBP/.261 SLG since being acquired. The Yankees heroes of September include Alex Rodriguez (.426 OBP for the month), Robinson Cano (.714 SLG for the month), Jorge Posada (.594 SLG) and Shawn Chacon (2.45 ERA). Two more against the listless Orioles before they
    visit Boston.

    4. White Sox
    3rd
(-1) 1st/22nd Despite the recent backsliding, there's been an encouraging development on the South Side of Chicago consistent rotation duty for Brandon McCarthy. Since the All-Star break, McCarthy has worked 31.1 innings with a 1.15 ERA, and that's in tandem with a tremendous record of performance in the minors. Will Ozzie Guillen have the good sense to
put him in the playoff rotation? That remains to be seen.

Keith Foulke probably won't pitch again this year, David Wells' knee is barking, and Johnny Damon, thanks to a sore shoulder, has a .309 OBP for the month of September. On the bright side, the Sox play the rest of their games at home, where they're 50-24 this season. Monday's rainout means someone will be starting on
three days' rest against the Yankees.

    6. Braves
    5th
(-1) 1st/12th Here's something for Atlanta to worry about: John Smoltz has a sore shoulder and probably won't pitch again until the NLDS. GM John Schuerholz may have made the best acquisition of all at the trade deadline; closer Kyle Farnsworth, since coming over from Detroit, is 9-for-9 in save opportunities with a 1.54 ERA. In other good news, the Braves'
magic number in the East is down to one.

    7. Angels
    7th
SAME 1st/15th The Halos have clinched the seventh 90-win season in franchise history and the third such campaign in the last four years. John Lackey's been tremendous since the break. In the second half, he's worked 93 innings, posted a 2.71 ERA, struck out 87 and given up only five homers. Kelvim Escobar has a 2.12 ERA in 17 innings since coming back from
    the DL.

    8. A's
    6th
(-2) 3rd/28th It's over for Oakland. They're five games back of the Angels with six to play with Rich Harden available only for bullpen duty. The A's locked up Dan Haren with a four-year contract extension. His occasional struggles this season aside, his minor league numbers augur success at the highest level. He'll be a breakout candidate in 2006.

    9. Astros
    9th
SAME 9th/24th Thanks to the Philly choke-job on Monday, the 'Stros have a game-and-a-half lead in the wild-card race. Roger Clemens' balky hamstring should allow him to make his next scheduled start, but he still has a 5.40 ERA for the month of September. Also a source of concern: Dan Wheeler's been almost as bad as Clemens this month.
Team page | Statistics | Fantasy news
    10. Phillies
    10th
SAME 4th/26th Jimmy Rollins, with his 32-game hitting streak, now holds the franchise record, which was previously held by Ed Delahanty, who hit in 31 straight back in 1899. Trade update ... Ugueth Urbina as a Philly: 48.1 innings, 4.47 ERA. Placido Polanco as a Tiger: .340 AVG/.390 OBP/.463 SLG, 361 plate appearances.

QB M. Hasselbeck (Sea - QB)
Has been efficient, but hasn't really stood out and had a game to make everyone stand up and take notice. It probably won't come against Dallas' 14th-ranked pass defense, either.  12

QB D. Bledsoe (Dal - QB)
Did his best to let the Giants win last weekend, but it didn't work out that way. Quietly threw for 312 yards. The loss of Flozell Adams is going to be a big blow to his pass protection. 20

RB S. Alexander (Sea - RB)
Four touchdowns in one game is impressive, but considering it was against Houston, was anyone really surprised? Alexander is certainly among the top-three running backs in the league. Starting him every week is a no-brainer.  19

Ran for 104 yards and a touchdown last week in relief of Alexander. That may not happen again since the Seahawks don't have any more cupcakes like the Texans on their schedule. 1

RB A. Thomas (Dal - RB)
Bill Parcells probably felt like he was watching a senior citizen cross the street as the A-Train slowly churned 47 yards over 21 carries. Thomas didn't fumble, though, and Parcells is stubborn. Two signs which point to the Cowboys trying the same thing again this week, assuming Thomas is ready to go. 3

    Sunday, September 25th, 2005
Given the massive amounts of scientific illiteracy in this country, which
manifests itself daily in the appalling scientific reporting in the media and
modern day luddite views about technology, you would have thought that
    science
    teaching would be a priority.
However, in order to make science more relevant to the 21st century, the
    government are to []
High blood pressure not well controlled among older men and women

    Falling High/Low Comment
    1. Cardinals

    2. Indians
    2nd
SAME 2nd/24th Imagine how pretty the Tribe would be sitting if they'd gotten adequate production from their first basemen, third basemen and right fielders. In any event, their remaining games come at home. However, the Tribe this season has a better record away from the Jake. They're also only 8-15 this season against their remaining opponents, the D-Rays
and White Sox. If all that sounds grim, Cleveland still is tied with the Red Sox and Yankees for the AL wild card.
Team page | Statistics | Fantasy news
    3. Yankees
Team page | Statistics | Fantasy news
    4. White Sox
Team page | Statistics | Fantasy news
    5. Red Sox
    4th
(-1) 1st/13th Those aching Red Sox ...
Team page | Statistics | Fantasy news
    6. Braves
Team page | Statistics | Fantasy news
    7. Angels
Kelvim Escobar has a 2.12 ERA in 17 innings since coming back from
    the DL.
Team page | Statistics | Fantasy news
    8. A's
